Remembrance 2021
Remembrance 2020
A Covid19 year. Old Pastonians wreath marked the day this year. A fantastic display in the Church.
Centenary Remembrance Day - 1919 - 2019
To honour the fallen and mark the centenary of the first 2 minutes silence held in 2019, the society purchased the Royal British Legion commemorative coin. This will be displayed in the Nelson Room cabinets at the College in remembrance of the 46 Old Pastonians, and all others who gave their lives in the 2 world wars.
The coin is a limited edition £5 coin of 2019, in solid silver, embossed with poppies, minted in Jersey and engraved 'WE WILL REMEMBER THEM' on the obverse face and with the head of Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse (in numismatic terms, so I am informed). |
Centenary Armistice Day - 1918-2018
At the 2018 SOP AGM it was proposed to mark the Centenary of Armistice Day with a Wreath on behalf of Old Pastonians who served and perished in WW1, at the North Walsham Remembrance Service.
This was arranged in due course, and laid by Steve Baker, 'lest we forget' : I attended the 3.00 pm remembrance service at St Nicholas Church and laid the wreath on behalf of the Society. The church was packed ,with standing room only , with congregation covering all ages groups. As with other services across the country it was poignant and respectful and I have to say I felt very honoured to be able to pay tribute by laying the wreath to the 46 former pupils of the school who died in service. The last post, silence and reveille were as usual magnificently observed. |

Pastonians Serving in the Forces - WW1
Asides from the fatalities reported on the Honour Rolls, there was some research performed in 1917 by the School, recording all Old Pastonians who were serving or who had perished in WW1. some 300+.
As part of Remembrance Sunday 2014, we have scanned a copy of the 1917 Pastonian, gratefully provided from the estate of 'Doker' Havercroft, which details all these young men. In due course, I hope we can have the scan transposed into text, such that it will appear in searches for those doing family genealogy research etc (it turns out that this page is one of the most frequently hit, from external search engines!) |

RAF Casualty Records - WWII
The following WWII RAF details provided courtesy of Old Pastonian - Alan Thomas, MOD
Sergeant Philip Doyle Havercroft (ex Paston English Teacher...)
RIP: 1942
Sergeant L S Middleton Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF)
Flight Sergeants A C Maclure {Pilot}
C M Chenoweth {Wireless Operator/Air Gunner}
T G Richards {Air Gunner}
Courtesy of Alan Thomas, November 2014: Although I never got to meet ‘Doker’ in person in post-Paston years, it was nice to have corresponded with him by post for numerous years, in recent times, indeed up until not long before he passed away. Here's what I researched, again quite poignant as the incident occurred in the month of November:
1002352 Sergeant Philip Doyle Havercroft Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve {RAFVR} was the Observer aboard Baltimore Mk. III, Serial No. AG851, of No. 223 Squadron, based at Landing Ground No. 29, Amiriya, Egypt, Middle East Command.
On 2nd November 2014, Baltimore AG851 took off on a bombing mission as part of a force of 46 aircraft (18 Baltimores, escorted by 28 Kittyhawks – 12 of which were also carrying bombs). 19 tons of High Explosive were dropped on Ghazal railway station, bombs were seen to straddle the station, and a building was hit. AG852 was damaged by a blast from Baltimore III, AG852, also of No. 223 Squadron, which was hit and destroyed by Anti-Aircraft fire over Ghazal.
Sergeant Philip Havercroft was slightly injured, but the remainder of the crew, Sergeant J G S Dalton (Pilot), and Sergeants Richards & Haslen, were uninjured in the incident. AG851 sustained ‘Category B’ damage (beyond repair on site but repairable at a Maintenance Unit, or at a Contractor’s works). AG852 was ‘Category E’, a write-off, and all four members of the crew lost their lives. The body of the Observer, Flight Sergeant L S Middleton Royal Australian Air Force {RAAF}, was recovered, and buried in Plot XVI, Row E, Grave 11, of El Alamein War Cemetery. Flight Sergeants A C Maclure {Pilot}, C M Chenoweth {Wireless Operator/Air Gunner}, and T G Richards {Air Gunner} – all RAAF – were listed as ‘Missing, No Known Grave’. Their deaths were presumed to have occurred on 2nd November 1942, and they are commemorated on Column 265 of the Alamein Memorial.

Kenneth Pettit - 1947
Some research on Kenneth Pettit and his crew, reported in the 100th edition of the Pastonian magazine in 1947 and referenced in the 2014 SOP Newsletter. Kenneth Pettit had been killed in a Halifax plane bravely attempting to drop supplies to a snowbound Staffordshire village in a snowy February. Alan provided the following public detail about this Old Boy post war tragedy:
1876996 Signaller II [his Rank] Kenneth Charles Pettit RAFVR [Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve], born 4th May 1925 in London, enlisted in the Royal Air Force on 30th May 1943, and at the time of the flying accident at 10.05 hours on 13th February 1947 was employed as a Wireless Operator with No. 47 Squadron, RAF Station Fairford, Gloucestershire, No. 38 Group, Transport Command, and was a member of the crew aboard Halifax Mk. IX, Serial No. RT922. This aircraft was on a supply dropping flight to isolated snowbound villages, and was 1 hour and 3 minutes into its flight when it lost height in a right-hand turn and struck high ground, in very low cloud, over Grindon Moor, Staffordshire, 8 miles East of Leek. The other four members of the crew, Squadron Leader McIntyre, Flight Lieutenant Smith, Warrant Officer Kearne, and Warrant Officer Chapman, together with an Army passenger, and two civilian passengers, all lost their lives in the incident.

Leonard Barham FO., RAF. 1927-33
Additional info. re: 'World War II 1939 - Roll of Honour: Leonard Barham FO., RAF. 1927-33'
137581 Flying Officer Leonard Alfred Barham RAFVR (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), son of William John and Anna Barham of Cawston, was employed by the RAF as an Air Bomber. However, as the Specialist Equipment Officer aboard Stirling Mk. III, Serial No. LJ518, Code Letters 'EK-K', of No. 199 Squadron, Bomber Command, he took off from RAF North Creake at 19.02 hours on 25th September 1944, with 7 other members of the crew, on a Bomber Support Mission. Tasked to provide a Mandrel screen (a patrol line of RAF aircraft employing Mandrel radar jamming equipment), the sortie was completed and the pilot descended through cloud. Unfortunately, the Stirling ploughed into tree tops, power was applied, the aircraft climbed steeply but then dived into the ground at Edgefield Street, 3 miles NNW of Sculthorpe, Norfolk, at 21.45 hours, with the loss of the entire crew aboard. Flying Officer Leonard Barham's body was taken to his home, 5 miles away at Cawston. He was laid to rest in Cawston Cemetery, aged 29.
In July 1995, F/O Barham's niece and family attended a special unveiling ceremony of an exhibition cabinet, dedicated to the crew and their aircraft, at Flixton. Much of what is held in the cabinet was found in 1987 by a team from the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum.

Maurice Brundall P.O., RAF. 1927-31
Additional info. re: 'World War II 1939 - 1945 Roll of Honour: Maurice Brundall P.O., RAF. 1927-31' 81347 Pilot Officer (ex-700012 Sergeant) Maurice Arthur Brundall RAFVR (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), was the pilot of Spitfire Mk. IIA, Serial No. P7838, of No. 8 Maintenance Unit (a Civil Manned Aircraft Storage Unit), RAF Little Rissington, Maintenance Command, which took off on 22nd February 1941 on a Delivery Flight (Digby - Hornchurch). Unfortunately, the Spitfire landed on a flagged and dangerous part of the aerodrome at RAF Oakington at 16.45 hours, where its wheels sank in and it overturned. Pilot Officer Martin Brundall was killed in the Flying Accident, and is laid to rest in North Walsham New Cemetery.
Norman Drury Cpl., R.A.F. 1929-31
Additional info. re: 'World War II 1939 - 1945 - Roll of Honour: Norman Drury Cpl., R.A.F. 1929-31' 537272 Corporal Norman Richard Drury RAF, son of Ernest Richard and Edith Ellen Drury, of North Walsham, was a member of the crew aboard Hudson Mk. I, Serial No. N7924, Code Letters 'NR-E', of No. 220 Squadron, Coastal Command, which took off from RAF Thornaby at 04.10 hours on 11th Febtuary 1940 for an Operational Reconnaissance over the North Sea. Unfortunately, soon after take-off the Hudson flew into a hilltop (Cook Monument Hill, near Great Ayton, Yorkshire), with the loss of Corporal Drury and two other members of the four man crew. The fourth crew member survivied with concussion and severe cuts, and managed to scramble down the hill to a farmhouse, which he reached at about 08.00 hours. The Flying Accident was possibly due to the formation of frost on the inside of the windscreen and windows. Corporal Norman Drury is laid to rest in North Walsham New Cemetery.
Frederick Easton FO., R.A.F. 1926-30
Additional info. re: 'World War II 1939 - 1945 - Roll of Honour: Frederick Easton FO., R.A.F. 1926-30' 132837 Flying Officer Frederick William Easton RAFVR (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), son of William Henry and Emily Easton, of Cromer, was employed by the RAF as a Navigator/Bomber. He was aboard Boston Mk. III, Serial No. BZ220, No. 107 Squadron, Fighter Command, which took off from RAF Hartfordbridge at 15.00 hours on 13th September 1943 on a Practice Search Flight. Unfortunately, the Starboard engine caught fire and the aircraft lost height. A forced landing was attempted but the starboard wing hit a tree and the Boston crashed onto its back at 15.15 hours and burnt. Flying Officer Easton and two other members of the four man crew were killed in the Flying Accident. The remaining member of the crew was seriously injured. Flying Officer Frederick Easton's body was taken to Hartfordbridge Mortuary. He is laid to rest in Cromer No. 2 Burial Ground.
Peter Youngman Flight Sg., Pilot, R.A.F. 1934-37
Additional info. re:'World War II 1939 - 1945 - Roll of Honour: Peter Youngman Flight Sg., Pilot, R.A.F. 1934-37 1615004 Flight Sergeant Peter William Youngman RAFVR (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), was employed by the RAF as a Pilot. However, on 8th October 1945 he was carrying out the duties of a Flight Engineer aboard Lancaster Mk. I, Serial No. NG304, No. 166 Squadron, RAF Kirmington, Bomber Command, which took off at 17.40 hours on a Training Flight. Unfortunately, whilst flying on instruments, the pilot lost control of Lancaster NG304 after the Port Outer engine caught fire, due to an oil leak, and the aircraft overshot on landing at RAF Kirmington, on three engines, nose-diving into the ground 100 yards from the Guardroom, at 22.35 hours. The pilot had allowed the aircraft speed to become too low and over-banked it, also failing to "feather" (make propeller blades rotate in such a way as to lessen air resistance) the Port Outer engine, whilst not retracting the undercarriage soon enough. Flight Sergeant Peter Youngman and five other members of the crew were killed in the Flying Accident. The seventh crew member was slightly injured. Flight Sergeant Peter William Youngman is laid to rest in North Walsham New Cemetery.
