The Paston Foundation is a Charity that are custodians of the historical assets of Paston, including the 1606 Founding Charter, the art and memorabilia collection and in trust, various titles of land including the School itself and the School Playing Fields. Through this has Paston been able to thrive or survive the many changes in its long history. It is the duty of the Foundation, and its Trustees, to act in the interests of Paston, and as such they have tabled a proposal to convert some of the investments it holds. Please see details here:
Dear Society member,
During the AGM on Saturday 22nd October, a number of you will been present when Peter Stibbons (representing, as one of the Trustees of the Foundation) made us aware of the possible proposal to sell the school playing fields adjacent to the railway in North Walsham.
Based on comment made following this information, a number of you intimated that the Society of Old Pastonians should have the opportunity to make their feelings felt about any proposal to sell this land, on the grounds of promoting the interests of the College/School, both in the longer – as well as shorter - term. Accordingly, I will be very pleased to receive any comments back which can form the basis of a more formal comment from the Society.
It certainly appears that there are push and pull factors at work in realising the value of this land, including a council request for bodies to identify land which could be made available for development, and providing increased annuity money to the college for revenue expenses such as marketing.
At the outset, I should state that my personal view is that such a sale will deprive the school of sport and recreational grounds should the opportunity ever arise for it to become a school once more, or for it to be able to offer courses requiring such facilities now and in the future. Also that once land is disposed of, it can never be got back. As such, the land should be protected and retained.
Your comments, thoughts and ideas will be very welcome, and I look forward to hearing from you shortly.
Your sincerely,
Mark Northway,
Vice President, Society of Old Pastonians, 2016
